Fall Storywalk® - Step Gently Out

Fans of the Ashland Public Library’s StoryWalk® can now rejoice; a fall StoryWalk® has been erected along the main walking path through Freer Field. Featuring the book Step Gently Out by Helen Frost and Rick Lieder, the latest StoryWalk® displays have been weatherproofed and constructed by Ashland Public Library Maintenance Associate Jim Thomas. The book lyrically explores many different creatures that could possibly be found along the walk, with facts and photographs at the end of the book about each creature which made an appearance in the story.

StoryWalk® is a fun, educational activity that places a children's story (a deconstructed book, page by page) along a popular walking route in the community. StoryWalk® helps build children's interest in reading while encouraging healthy activity for both adults and children. The StoryWalk® Project was created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, VT and developed in collaboration with the Kellogg Hubbard Library. StoryWalk® is a registered service mark owned by Ms. Ferguson.

The Ashland Public Library’s version of StoryWalk® is made possible because of a grant from the Ashland County Community Foundation and through a partnership with the Ashland County Park District (ACPD). Library Youth Services Coordinator Hayley Tracy-Bursley describes the StoryWalk® as a “great chance for families to get outdoors and create positive literacy experiences.”

A kick-off event is planned for Tuesday, October 11 at 4:00 p.m. at the Bicentennial Barn at Freer Field located at 1264 South Center Street. There will be a children’s craft, followed by an explanation of the StoryWalk®, then the families will get to set off along the path to read the book at their own pace.

The StoryWalk® is planned to remain at Freer Field until mid-November, or as long as the weather permits. Anyone can enjoy the StoryWalk® at any time that suits their schedule, within the ACPD’s posted hours. A winter-themed StoryWalk® is also in the works, possibly throughout Downtown Ashland. More details will be available at the end of the year.

Here and here are thank you letters from local first graders, who took a school field trip to the StoryWalk®, along with the annual first grade visit to the library.
