Summer Reading 2017 and Free Lunch Program

Summer Reading 2017 is for everyone! All ages can participate to win books, prizes, and Build A Better World from June 5 through August 5!

Participating is very simple: pick up a summer reading log for your age range (pre-readers (i.e. infants), youth, teen, or adult), and complete 15 of the activities to earn a book of your choice. Or, go for the gold and complete 30 activities to earn a book of your choice plus a chance to win an experienced-based prize. The activities on the logs still include reading, but also expand to other fun, enriching, age-appropriate activities such as teaching someone a game, creating new recipes, volunteering, finger-painting, telling a librarian a joke, geocaching, crafting, stargazing, and attending library events - to name a few.

A small sample of some of the prize books, generously donated by Bookmasters.

Many generous local businesses and organizations donated the experienced-based prizes. To date, we have received prizes from the African Safari Wildlife Park, Akron Rubber Ducks, Applebees, Ashland Golf Club, Ashland Symphony, Bookmasters, Charles Mill Marina, Cleveland Cavaliers, COSI, Loudonville Canoe Livery, Little Buckeye Museum, Mohican Adventures,
ODNR/Ohio State Parks, Ohio Renaissance Festival,
Ohio Theatre, Papa John's, Pizza Hut, Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, Tin Can Chandelier,
Trails End Pizza Co., and Tree Frog Zip Line, with more arriving each day.

In addition to the reading program, there are plenty of interesting programs during the summer. The popular Books in the Park program, made possible by the Ashland County Parks District, is scheduled again this year. A Summer Author Series has already kicked off, featuring 11 different authors talking about and signing their books up through September. Events featuring art, egg drops, live penguins, insects, polka bands, escape rooms, storytelling, canning, origami, stamp camp, Chautauqua, and even an after-hours game of Humans v. Zombies are all planned. The annual Touch-A-Truck is the grand finale of the summer, on August 5 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Downloadable Youth Program guides and Teen Program guides are available through our website and from the library and Bookmobile. Or check out our website calendar for all of our great programming.

Free Summer Lunches are offered again this year, at two locations, for children up to 18 years, made possible by the Greater Cleveland Food Bank, Ohio Department of Education, and USDA (which is an equal opportunity provider and employer.) Starting June 6, on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 11:00 a.m. to 11:45 am, lunches will be served by the Bookmobile at their Ashland Christian Church stop, at 1480 Orange Street. On the same days, at 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m., lunches will be served at the main library at 224 Claremont Avenue. The last day lunches will be served will be on Thursday, August 10.

The champion of the summer reading program is the Friends of the Ashland Public Library group. The funds they raise through their book sales (which take quite a lot of work, volunteer-hours, and preparation all year long) make it possible to offer all of the programs and a portion of the prizes, which exceed the library’s regular budget.  This great group of volunteers has been helping make summer reading great since 1977, which means they are celebrating their 40th anniversary this summer. Consider becoming a member and Friend of the library today.

Contact the Ashland Public Library for more information at 419-289-8188, at, or by stopping by the service desk on the main floor.
